The date is January 9, in the year of the lord 1493. Italian explorer Christopher Columbus is sailing off the coast of the Dominican Republic in search of the New World. Suddenly, one of the crew yells, “Arrrrrgh, there be mermaid amongst us”! Columbus went on to state “they were not nearly as beautiful as they are painted”. In actuality they turned out to be manatees, but eh, mermaid, manatee, whatever.

Mermaids are rich in history’s tales of sailors being lured into the ocean by the sirens beautiful song. Once there, the sailors are snatched up and dragged down to the briney deep, never to be seen again! It’s said that nervous sailors would carve wooden figures of mermaids and nail them to the bow of their ships to ward off these seductive monsters of the sea. Patterned off of an old tall ships figurehead, these dainty little mermaids will ward off those pesky sea creatures and look really cute doing it. I’ve cast these in Sterling Silver and then given them a light patina to bring out the detail.

Weight: .170 ozt (per earring)

Height: 26mm (from mermaids head to tail)

(Legal disclaimer: You will be buying a set of earrings similar to the one shown. They no longer have the extra ring attached to the mermaid like the ones pictured.. All measurements and weights are approximate. These beauties are handcrafted and can vary from piece to piece. As each item is hand-worked, they can include minor flaws and imperfections. This is normal and I feel it truly adds to their charm. They also may not ward off actual mermaids, or mermen, and I can not be held responsible if one gets you and snatches you up!)
