If you have never heard of Herkimer Diamonds , well, have I got a treat for you.

Herkimer diamonds, also referred to as “Herkimer quartz” or “Herkimer crystals”, are specific types of quartz crystals displaying a double-terminated configuration and highly polished-looking faces. 18 facets per stone, 6 top, 6 middle, and 6 bottom. They are referred to as Herkimer diamonds because they come straight out of the ground already faceted and shiny like diamonds. The smaller ones are extremely clear but as they get larger they start to develop fractures inside.

These 18-sided quartz crystals are found in exposed outcrops of dolomite and druzy quartz in and around Herkimer County, New York. Although not as strong as Carbon based diamonds they do rate a 7 on a Mohs’ scale just like amethyst. Diamonds are a 10, Topaz at an 8, and rubies and sapphires a 9.

On our way home from the Laconia Rally we stopped in Herkimer New York and dug these little beauties ourselves.(we will be stopping again next year and spending a couple days playing in the dirt) This year we spent the day at the Crystal Grove Mine and when we returned home I turned them into earrings.

All of my jewelry, with the exception of the commercially manufactured Italian chains, is custom made. Everything is hand poured or hand formed by me and me alone. I start with .999 pure Silver bullion and alloy it down to the worldwide industry standard “Sterling Silver” of .925 purity for jewelry. .999 Silver is way too soft for the longevity of items like rings and such. During the alloying process NO NICKEL is ever used. I am extremely diligent of this as I myself have a Nickel allergy. From initial design to finished product I do it all. The end result is an heirloom quality piece of jewelry, you would be proud to pass down for generations to come.

(Legal disclaimer: You will be buying an item similar to the one shown. All measurements and weights are approximate. This ring is handcrafted and can vary from piece to piece. As each item is hand-worked, they can include minor flaws and imperfections. This is normal and I feel it truly adds to their charm. For shipping to countries outside the United States, it can take up to 4-6 weeks and all country specific taxes, and or duty, are not included.)
